Hero Overview: Kaito

New Hero: Kaito, The Living Weapon

LORE

The settlement where Kaito was born had been doomed long before he came into the world. Built on the outskirts of Chinatown by the families that would one day become the People’s Guard, the village grew without ever knowing what lay beneath its foundations: a sealed military arsenal buried before the Collapse and, according to the few surviving records, something inside it capable of stopping the UAF when it returned.

Kurtz knew. And what Kurtz wants, Kurtz takes.

The KLG did not negotiate, lay siege, or demand surrender. They erased the settlement from the map. Those who survived the bombardment were driven out, and behind the soldiers came the excavators. For weeks, they tore through the ruins of what had once been home to hundreds of families.

They found no weapon.

What no one understood—not that day, nor for years afterward—was that the bombardment had breached the sealed chamber. And somewhere between the leak and the surface, buried alive beneath the rubble, was a young boy. And for days, the exposed Heronium seeped into his small body. It was a dose that would have killed any adult.

The boy did not die. He absorbed it.

When the KLG finally gave up and left, the Magistrate arrived, drawn less by the tragedy than by a single question: what had Kurtz been searching for with such relentless determination?

Their scanners swept across the ruins. They found no weapon either. They found a survivor.

And within his body, readings that forced the technicians to recalibrate their sensors three times: traces of Heronium. Stable. Fully integrated. Invisible to the naked eye, detectable only by those with the right equipment and who knew exactly what to look for.

Officially, the Magistrate rescued an orphan of war that day.

In a classified file, someone recorded a hypothesis they never dared to write outright: What if the weapon the KLG had been searching for, had simply walked away?

The boy grew up within the Magistrate’s facilities without ever learning who had destroyed his home. No one could tell him. Or no one wanted to.
The records of the attack were classified, and the witnesses had long since scattered. So he made the only choice he could: he became obsessed with becoming the finest agent the Magistrate had ever produced. Not for glory, but because every promotion opened another door, every security clearance unlocked another classified archive. Whenever he could, between missions, he searched for answers.

They were never there and he never suspected why.

He also never questioned why he was faster than his instructors, why his wounds healed cleanly, or why his body endured hardships that crippled others. He credited it all to relentless training and the Magistrate allowed him to believe that.

His years of training gave him the only two people he would ever truly call family: Lin Jie Zhu, the physician he nicknamed Liyan, and Yuu Hazekawa, the brilliant, eccentric scientist who shared his rare moments of laughter. Yuu gave him the H.A.Z.E.'s Handgun, an energy pistol of incredible speed and precision. Liyan forged the Li’s Saber, a portable blade of light capable of slicing through steel itself. Both weapons were far too conspicuous for a covert operative, reserved only for moments when the situation became truly desperate. His friends simply called him Kai, and whenever he returned from a mission, he would leave folded origami cranes on the infirmary desk so Liyan would know he had come back safely.

Then came the highest-risk mission of his career: leading the investigation into a suspected shipment of illegal weapons inside a settlement protected by the People’s Guard.

An aging veteran stood watch over the settlement as the Magistrate investigation began. And in the moment he looked into Kai’s eyes, he froze. He knew those eyes. The few words the old man spoke were enough. Everything fell into place at once.

The report of “illegal weapons” that never added up. The orders that had always felt subtly wrong. The silent signals exchanged between his teammates, the same battlefield cues he had seen countless times before. His unit was never there to investigate the settlement. They were there to destroy it. And it was from the People’s Guard, not from the Magistrate’s classified archives, that Kaito finally learned the answer he had spent his entire life searching for.

It had been the KLG that erased the Chinatown settlement from the map, digging through its ruins in search of a weapon they never found. The survivors had told that story for years. Everyone there knew it. Only the Magistrate, who had arrived days after the attack, had never told him. His own unit consisted of KLG infiltrators, and the growing cooperation between the factions had never been diplomacy. It had been infiltration. The KLG had been inside the Magistrate for years. Gaining influence. Mapping the hidden arsenal. Suppressing records. Including his own. No one could say anymore who truly belonged to the Magistrate… and who belonged to the KLG.

Instead of subduing his enemies as he always had, Kaito made a different choice that day. And when silence finally returned, he was the only Magistrate agent still standing while the bodies of his own squad layed around him.

The gray-haired veteran approached once more, speaking of Kaito’s eyes. They were the same eyes as his wife, the woman he had lost beneath the ruins of Chinatown. Kaito’s father was alive. And he was leading a People’s Guard settlement.

The Magistrate never released an official report about the incident. Whether the silence came from leaders ashamed of what had happened or from KLG infiltrators burying the evidence, no one knows. In the records that remain, Kaito is listed as a traitor and a murderer, with a bounty on his head.

Today, he fights alongside the People’s Guard as a renegade, protecting both his father’s people and his own with the weapons his two closest friends gave him, hoping that one day he will see them again. Unaware that, to everyone still digging through the truth behind Chinatown… He is no longer considered merely the lone survivor.

He is the living weapon.
