Before she was a Major, she was Lara—and Lara had no surname, nor a recorded date of birth anywhere. Like so many other children lost to the war, she was raised by one of the leaders of an dangerous faction. Not out of kindness, but because children without a past are easy to mold.
As she grew up, she heard stories about a soldier named Diesel: disciplined, ruthless, and strong enough to be feared even within the very faction that had raised her. The name was used almost as a warning to keep the younger ones in line, a distant legend she never imagined would one day actually cross her path.
She didn’t grow up alone. By her side, training the same moves, eating the same meager rations, sleeping in the same cold barracks. Was the closest thing she would ever have to a sister. Together, they learned to move unseen, to lie without hesitation, and to survive before they ever learned to live.
One night, they were assigned a mission. It was their first mission together, even though each had previously led small-scale thefts in separate groups. Both had leadership experience, which created conflict and ambiguity regarding who was actually heading the expedition. It was their first major disagreement, and the words exchanged were harsh enough to leave a bitter taste in their mouths.
The mission seemed simple on paper: infiltrate a facility and steal a piece of forbidden technology, a suit of armor still in the testing phase. But the extraction went wrong the moment the armor reacted to contact and locked onto Lara’s body, clinging to her back like a second skeleton she couldn’t tear off. Unable to run or shake off the weight, Lara was left behind as the rest of the group, including the girl she considered a sister, vanished into the alleyways. She was surrounded, captured, and handed over to the military forces patrolling the area.
From her cell, she heard snatches of rumor: that no one had come back to try and get her out. Lara reached the only conclusion that made sense: that the fight the night before had been so severe, she had been abandoned on purpose.
Trapped and with no safety net to fall back on, Lara did what was necessary to survive: she cooperated. She worked. She learned. The UAF Airborne does not forgive easily, but it recognizes utility and Lara had that in spades. Years of forced discipline transformed, under a new banner, into the discipline of a soldier. She rose through the ranks the way someone with nothing left to lose does: quickly, and without looking back.
At some point during that ascent, she stopped answering to the name Lara. It wasn’t a single decision, but a process. Each time someone questioned her past, it became easier to leave Lara buried alongside the faction that had created her. All that remained was the rank. “Major” ceased to be a title and became who she was.
Today, Major is one of the most respected officers in UAF Airborne: a strategist, discreet, and surgically efficient in the field. She wears her uniform like a second skin, built upon the bones of who she used to be. And does so without flinching at the price that uniform demands. Classified operations, decisions that never make it into a report, missions the UAF itself prefers not to oversee too closely: for Major, none of this is cause for doubt. It is simply how war works.
Not everyone sees it that way. Outside official channels, groups like The Watch, remnants of the volunteers who once took up arms to protect their own communities, view the Airborne as the very embodiment of the unchecked power that helped destroy the world they were trying to save. Increasingly cornered and radicalized, they lack the numbers to take on the Airborne head-on. Yet, they have people willing to pull off daring strikes against targets too big to ignore and a division as classified and unregulated as Major’s is exactly the kind of target that draws that sort of attention.
She never learned what happened to the rest of the group that day. Over time, she concluded that no one had survived the escape and she made peace with that, in her own way, without ever truly setting down the weight of it.
